How to Teach Syllable Division - Intervention Tip of the Week

Syllable division is a critical skill for students to learn in reading intervention, but the VCCV letter markings can be really confusing for them! Keep reading to learn about an easier way to teach syllable division!

Today we wanted to share our intervention tip of the week! How to teach syllable division to support decoding skills.

We have a great resource you can use to learn WHY we should -

Teach Syllable Division Patterns

We’re going to walk you through our process and give you some thoughts on why we use the “spot and dot” strategy (more information on this in the video!) for finding vowels in words instead of using the complex VCCVVCCCV (just kidding on that word - but it does start to seem like the Morse code or binary 0001100011 code that programmers use). No wonder it can be so confusing for our students ;)

Watch the video below to learn more about why we teach syllable division strategies and how we teach them in a way that is easier for students than other popular models!

And, if you’re interested in checking out some materials that you can use to reinforce syllable division concepts with your students, then use the link below to check out some fun games you can start using as part of your lessons!
